Poetry Slam Rules
Anyone can sign up to compete in the poetry slam. No need to sign-up in advance, simply show up and add your name to the list!
Details you need to know before entering the slam:
- The poetry slam is open to everyone, but only 10 spots are available each slam (first come, first served)
- Slam spots can to booked in advance for poets traveling from out of town
- There are two rounds of competition (prepare two poems!)
- Five judges are randomly selected from the audience
- Poems are scored out of 10, high and low scores are dropped for a total score out of 30
- The top four poets move onto the second round
- there total score will be out of 60 (1st round score + 2nd round score)
- The highest scored poet of the evening wins the slam
If you are slamming, then your poems must follow these guidelines:
- Only original work!
- Poems must be under 3 minutes (with a 10 second grace period)
- For every 10 seconds over the time limit, the poet loses 0.5 points
- No props or instruments are allowed, poets can only use their voices
- Team pieces are encouraged!
